In addition to our speaker’s presentation, the documentary film called “Banded: How a Birder's-Eye View Made a Community.” This film was directed by Dr. Rice and features our very own Dr. Dave Russell Dr. David Russell and the Avian Research and Education Institute (AREI).

Dr. Andy Rice is an Associate Professor of Film Studies and Media and Communication in the Department of Media, Journalism & Film at Miami University, where he writes about the feeling of documentary camerawork and makes documentary films with collaborators about institutional histories, identity, and social change.  He focuses on regional issues with broader social implications through honoring the beauty and dignity of everyday, community-minded people and the animals, plants, things, and places that center their care.  In addition to Banded (2024), he has produced five truly meaningful documentaries since 2020.  He has loved getting to know birders and the world of ornithology through his collaboration with Dr. David Russell and the Avian Research and Education Institute (AREI) at Hueston Woods.
